How the past 20 Masters champions have handled Amen Corner in the final round

Amen Corner was famous well before 2016, but that year reminded us exactly why it was. In 2016, reigning champ Jordan Spieth made the turn Sunday at 7-under with a five-stroke lead. Then came a bogey, and a bogey, and a quadruple bogey, and the green jacket was out of sight.

Spieth's 4-over 16 on Amen Corner (he birdied 13), was one of the worst last-round meltdowns by a leader on Augusta National's most famous stretch. Danny Willet, who would go on to win that year's Masters, posted a 1-under 11 on those three holes Sunday.

So, does that three-hole run decide whether a golfer has a shot at the green jacket? How have the past 20 Masters champions fared on Amen Corner in their final round?

Better than average, unsurprisingly, but not great. 

For the past 20 champions, the average final-round score for the three holes is 0.55 strokes under par, as opposed to a historical average of 0.37 strokes over par.
Only 11 of the past 20 Masters winners finished below par on holes 11, 12, and 13 in their fourth round, including two performances of 2-under (Phil Mickelson in 2004 and 2010). 

Eight finished at par, and two were able to withstand above-par performances on Amen Corner to capture a green jacket. 

In the past 20 years, though, no player has won the Masters with a score higher than 1-over on Amen Corner.

Let's break it down hole by hole:

Hole 11 - White Dogwood

Historically, White Dogwood is the second-hardest hole on the course, behind only No. 10. Only one Masters champion in the past 20 years has birdied No. 11 - Tiger Woods in 2001. Tiger would immediately bogey 12, and then finish with a birdie on 13 en route to his two-stroke win at 16-under.

Hole 12 - Golden Bell

It's not much of a shock that the one par 3 on this stretch is the hole that causes the most trouble. Four Masters champions in the past 20 years have bogeyed No. 12 in their final round.

Hole 13 - Azalea

The par 5 is a welcome sight after holes 11 and 12. No Masters champion in the past 20 years has carded anything above par No. 13 in their final round, and 15 of the 20 have come up with birdies here.
