2017 PGA Championship announces transportation plan

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 10, 2017) – The PGA of America today unveiled its transportation plan for the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club, in Charlotte, N.C., Aug. 7-13. Charlotte’s first-ever major golf championship is expected to attract more than 200,000 spectators, who will be encouraged to utilize a variety of methods to arrive on-site. 

Given the volume of expected attendees, the scale of the event and the location of Quail Hollow Club, organizers have devised a transportation plan to maximize ease of access while limiting impact on roads and neighborhoods near the golf course. Elements of the plan include:

Encouraging spectators to take advantage of LYNX Blue Line light rail system operated by the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS). Riders can take the Blue Line to the Sharon Road West Station and board a complimentary shuttle bus for the short ride to the Main Spectator Bus Terminal.

An UBER pick-up/drop-off lot will be located within close proximity of Quail Hollow Club. Golf fans will be able to utilize the popular ride-sharing service to conveniently arrive at the Championship. Complimentary shuttles will be provided from the pick-up/drop-off lot to the Main Spectator Bus Terminal.

Off-site dedicated parking will be available for purchase only by those who bought tickets directly from the PGA of America, with complimentary shuttle service from the lots to the Main Spectator Bus Terminal.

Walking or biking to the Championship is encouraged. Walk-in gates and bike racks will be available at the Main Spectator Entrance.

“The scale of the PGA Championship, including the on-site infrastructure required to produce and televise this event around the world, means we can only accommodate parking for players and caddies on the grounds of Quail Hollow Club,” said 2017 PGA Championship Director Jason Mengel. “We have worked closely with local officials over the past year and a half to develop a multi-faceted transportation plan. Our goal is for spectators to arrive at the Championship in the safest, most efficient way possible.”

Fans will be able to walk or bike to the Championship but should be aware of traffic and parking restrictions near the golf course. Gleneagles Road, which runs directly in front of the main entrance to Quail Hollow Club, will be closed to vehicle traffic throughout Championship week, with access limited only to those with a proper hang-tag.

Spectators utilizing the LYNX Blue Line should ride the light rail to the Sharon Road West Station. where they will then board a complimentary shuttle to the Main Spectator Bus Terminal. Shuttles will begin 30 minutes prior to gates opening, and end 30 minutes after gates close. Parking will not be available at the Sharon Road West Station.

Spectators electing to UBER to the Championship can simply enter the address – 8801 Park Road, Charlotte, N.C. – and their driver will take them to the designated UBER pick-up/drop-off lot. Complimentary shuttles will be provided from this lot to the Main Spectator Bus Terminal and will run 30 minutes prior to gates opening, and end 30 minutes after gates close. The UBER pick-up/drop-off lot is the only pick-up/drop-off location option for drivers on the UBER network. There will not be any pick-up or drop-off locations for taxis, limos or other ride-sharing companies.

Off-site parking will be available only for those who have purchased tickets directly from the PGA of America. Ticket purchasers should have received an email communication with instructions on how to purchase parking passes. Daily parking passes will not be sold at the various lots during Championship week and the deadline to purchase parking is Thursday, June 8. Overnight parking is not permitted, and spectators are strongly encouraged to carpool.

“Selling daily passes allows us to manage the availability of parking spaces throughout Championship week so that no one arrives to discover the lot is full,” said Mengel. “Passes will be sold according to the number of spaces available at each location, so fans can find parking easily and quickly board a shuttle bus for the ride to Quail Hollow Club.”
