How PGA Professionals are doing at Quail Hollow

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Omar Uresti arrived at Quail Hollow Club on a high, still basking in the afterglow of his victory in the 50th PGA Professional Championship in June in Sunriver, Oregon.

On Tuesday night, he was a guest at the annual PGA Champions Dinner and sat next to a childhood idol, 1966 Champion Al Geiberger.

“I was in high school when I watched Al play in the Legends of Golf at my home club, Onion Creek, in Austin (Texas),” said Uresti, “I got to know his son, Brandt, growing up. Sitting next to Al at dinner and to meet more of the PGA Champions was pretty awesome.”

Those special moments boosted Uresti’s spirits after posting a 3-over-par 74 in Thursday’s opening round of the 99th PGA Championship. Even a double bogey halfway through his round – a pulled approach shot into the creek near the 18th green (his ninth hole) – could not spoil Uresti’s day as he made his second consecutive start in the PGA Championship. His rollercoaster round featured three birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey.

It was a tough day for the 156-player field, which averaged 74.73 as Quail Hollow dried out from rain earlier in the week. Uresti led a 20-member PGA Club Professional contingent, while Matt Dobyns of Glen Head, New York, and Kenny Pigman of Norco, California, each had a 76.

“I think this course, even though it’s long, it suits my eye,” said Uresti. “It is tree-lined, which helps me from swinging out of my shoes. I am swinging smoother. The greens are very firm and I do hit long irons into many holes. It is difficult to get it close.

“Overall, it was a good day. I was pleased with the way I finished. I will remember making a birdie putt of 12 feet at No. 7. It was my best putt of the day.”

Two-time PGA Professional Champion Matt Dobyns missed only two fairways, yet took 38 putts.

“We knew it was going to be hard, that pars were valuable,” said Dobyns. “I look forward to tomorrow morning and playing the back nine like it should be played.

“It’s major championship golf and when you start four-over after three holes it’s tough to deal with.”
