Former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice will serve as honorary chairperson for the Champions Tour's Regions Tradition at Shoal Creek near her hometown.

The Birmingham native, who was announced as chairperson on Tuesday, is a Shoal Creek member.

The Regions Tradition May 3-8 will be the first of five major championships in the 2011 Champions Tour season. It replaces the Jeld-Wen Tradition and the city's Regions Charity Classic.

Shoal Creek hosted the PGA Championship in 1984 and again in 1990, when the club's all-white membership and remarks club founder Hall Thompson made that his club wouldn't be pressured into accepting black members sparked a controversy.

Thompson died in October. The club now has black members, including Rice.
