Phil Mickelson says 'we're close' to the $10 million rivalry match with Tiger Woods

Sit tight. It appears the Phil Mickelson vs. Tiger Woods made-for-TV $10 million dream match discussed earlier this month is coming soon.

Mickelson addressed the media after the first round of the Scottish Open on Thursday, July 12 on everything from an exact date of his rivalry match with Woods to the upcoming British Open to a misplayed ball that garnered him the spotlight roughly a month ago. While there isn't a date set for the Woods vs. Mickelson showdown just yet, he admitted the wheels were in motion and moving quickly.

“No, but hopefully in the next week or two," he said. "I think we’re close to having some stuff finalized.”

As far as that infamous putt at the US Open? “Not only was I not great on the course, I was not great after the round, either," Mickelson said. "So it was just not a great day, and it was my birthday. So I tend to do dumb stuff on my birthday, too.”

For now, Mickelson is focused on the upcoming Open Championship, his first major since the putt, and moving forward. “When I was over at Carnoustie, people were great, I wasn’t nervous,” he said. “I didn’t know that I should be. I think most people realize, you know, we all make mistakes and that wasn’t – that was certainly one of them.”

Lefty and Woods have long been in golf's spotlight, first teeing off against each other in the 1997 PGA Championship at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaronek, New York. A couple of memorable final rounds at The Masters and several turns at being teammates on past Ryder Cup teams have left us all pining for the day these two golf immortals could go toe-to-toe in a winner-take-all style match.
