Remembering Ryo Ishikawa's incredible 12-under 58

On May 2, 2010, 18-year-old Ryo Ishikawa carded the lowest score ever recorded on a major tour when he fired a final-round, 12-under 58 to win The Crowns in Togo, Japan, by five strokes. 

 

 

Ishikawa's card was bogey-free and included 12 birdies -- nine coming in his first 11 holes -- on the 6,545-yard Nagoya Golf Club Course. 

 

He missed a 15-footer for birdie on the final hole by inches and what would have been a 57.

"I always dreamed of getting a score like this but didn't think I would do it so fast," Ishikawa said then. "It hasn't really sunk in yet, but I'm sure it will after a few days."

 

The 58 was the lowest score ever recorded in a Japan Golf Tour event, topping the 59 Masahiro Kuramoto shot in the first round of 2003 Acom International.

 

However, because the course was a par-70 (versus the par-72 courses where some players shot 59), the record is not the lowest in relation to par.

 

Jim Furyk (2016 Travelers Championship on the PGA Tour) and Stephan Jäger (2016 Ellie Mae Classic on the Web.com Tour) are the only other players to shoot a 58 in major-tour competition. Both of those were also on par-70 courses. 

 

Ishikawa last played on the PGA Tour in 2017. In 20 starts, he made the cut eight times and had one top-10 finish, a T10 at the CIMB Classic.
