Revisiting classic Rickie Fowler bachelor photo on heels of engagement

Friday, Rickie Fowler announced he was engaged, which immediately brought to mind this famous picture:

The picture is from the 2016 Ryder Cup, where the U.S. team won for the first time since 2008, and did so in convincing fashion — 17-11.

After the win, all the teammates gathered on stage with their significant others, and posed for a romantic shot. 

Rickie, who didn’t have a significant other at the event, flashed what would soon become a famous expression. A bachelor badge of honor, if you will. The living embodiment of the ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ emoji.

The photo blew up on social media, with Fowler’s post of it on Instagram getting more than 160,000 likes.

It wasn’t even the only fantastic picture of Fowler at the celebration, as this one of Tom Lehman pouring champagne on Rickie would surely have taken the cake had it not been for the bachelor shot:

But it was the bachelor shot that would live on past the 2016 Ryder Cup.

In 2017, Fowler embarked on the annual Spring Break trip with fellow golfers Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, and Smylie Kaufman. Great photos have come out of the trip for years, but “#SB2K17” offered an amazing call-back, when Spieth, Thomas, and Kaufman posed with their girlfriends in front of the ocean, and Fowler posed… by himself.

Fowler is currently No. 6 in the 2018 Ryder Cup rankings, so there's a good chance we'll see him at Le Golf National this fall. But even if the U.S. wins, sadly, it has already lost one of its most iconic bachelor photo ops.
