Rylan Porter shoots 67 to lead Event No. 5 of PGA Tournament Series

PORT ST. LUCIE –  Rylan Porter birdied his last three holes to shoot a 5-under 67 Thursday and lead Event No. 5 of the PGA Tournament Series at PGA Golf Club.

Porter, an Assistant PGA Professional at Brickyard Crossing in Indianapolis, weathered the rain during the middle of his round and closed in style on the Wanamaker Course to position himself for his first PGA Tournament Series win. He leads by two shots.

“It was nice to finally roll some putts in the last three holes,” Porter said. “It was tough when the rain was coming down just trying to survive. I knew I would have a few birdie opportunities coming in.”

Steven Delmar of Rockville, Md., and Christopher Tallman of Hoylake, Mass., are tied for second after 69s. Delmar made six birdies to offset a bogey and a double bogey. Tallman shot his 69 despite bogeys on both par-5s on the back nine.

Bob Sowards, who won Event No. 3 and lost in a playoff to Matt Borchert in Event No. 4, is among six players tied for fourth place at 70. The others are Cian Curley of Naples, Jeff Sorenson of Blaine, Mn., of Chris Brown of Benbrook, Tex., Ryan Kalista of Greenwich, Ct., and Matt Rachey of Waconia, Minn.

The winner of the 36-hole event earns $5,000.

“It would be huge,” Porter said. “I’ve struggled the last few tournaments. I got it rolling today and hopefully it will carry over tomorrow.”
