A Quick Nine: Favorite golf movie characters

The PGA.com Facebook fans outdid themselves this week, providing -- literally -- hundreds of answers when we asked them to identify their favorite golf movie character.

I suppose we should have known in advance that we just as easily could have asked all of you to identify your favorite character in Caddyshack! While the characters from the greatest golf movie ever made didn't take all nine spots in this week's feature (though they easily could have), the presence of Caddyshack characters was about as overwhelming as Tiger's 15-shot win at the 2000 U.S. Open.

Let's just say that if the great Rodney Dangerfield were still with us and able to read this, there's no way he could claim he gets no respect.

So, here you have it -- your favorite characters in a golf movie:

9. Danny Noonan in Caddyshack. I must say, I was surprised at the lack of nods for Michael O'Keefe's Danny Noonan. Sure, he wasn't as funny as Chevy Chase or Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack, but Noonan was basically the centerpiece of the movie.

Facebook fan quote:

"Danny Noonan of course! Who else? 'Be the ball Danny!'" -- Mike Zuba

8. Bagger Vance in the Legend of Bagger Vance. Will Smith brilliantly plays the role of Bagger Vance, an outstanding caddie with a great advice.

Facebook fan quote:

"Bagger Vance by far. I'm a caddie and it's awesome to see a movie accurately depict the importance of a good caddie by your side when you need him most." -- Cody Mullen

7. Judge Smails in Caddyshack. Portrayed perfectly by Ted Knight, Judge Smails was one of Bushwood's co-founders. Wealthy, arrogant and with a questionable fashion sense, Smails was on the receiving end of plenty of jokes.

Facebook fan quotes:

"Judge Smails. 'You're playing golf and you're going to like it.'" -- Daniel Howell

"The Judge -- 'I've sentenced men younger than you to the gas chamber. Didn't want to do it, felt I owed it to them.'" -- Dwayne Garland

"The Judge -- 'The world needs ditch diggers too.'" -- Doug Hart

"Ted Knight as Judge Smails. No question." -- Steve Eblin

6. Chubbs Peterson in Happy Gilmore. Carl Weathers was the man who played Chubbs. Chubbs was Happy's golf coach, whose pro career came to an abrupt end when his right hand was bitten off by an alligator. Happy later gets revenge.

Facebook fan quote:

"Chubbs from Happy Gilmore. The man gave up a hand for the game... Need I say more?" -- John Pendleton

"Chubbs Peterson from Happy Gilmore." -- Jason Hodges

5. Happy Gilmore in Happy Gilmore. Played by Adam Sandler, many of our readers loved Happy Gilmore. Sure, the movie was entertaining and funny, but unfortunately that's never a character we'd see on the PGA Tour!

Facebook fan quotes:

"No doubt, Happy Gilmore. Don't we all wish we could smack that ball the way he does?" -- Cleveland de Jesus

"Happy Gilmore... hands down! Why? Because he is a professional hockey player and he beat Shooter McGavin's butt. Plus, he can handle batting cage baseballs in the chest. Excellent!" -- Illinois Jeff

"Happy Gilmore -- He always wanted to make it big in hockey until he found golf and figured that if he does well then he can make the money and save his grandmother's home. Adam Sandler does a great job playing the character and makes the movie very funny!" -- Matthew Dre Dalley

4. Al Czervik in Caddyshack. Man, was Rodney Dangerfield good as Al Czervik, or what? It was one-liner after one-liner the whole way through for Dangerfield. For my money, it was Dangerfield's finest hour.

Facebook fan quotes:

"Al Czervik." -- Jimmy Goodis

"Al Czervik. 'Hey Smails, $50 you slice into the woods!'" -- Corey Luetkemeyer

"Rodney Dangerfield. He gave us the most usable quotes. If I don't hear a Dangerfield or Bill Murray quote by hole 4, something's wrong." -- Samir Patel

"Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack. 'Ha, what an ugly hat! What do you buy it and get a free bowl of soup? Looks good on you though.'" -- Paul Ostby

"Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack because he exemplified how us amateurs should play the game." -- Paul Conant

"Al Czervik... 'Call the chief of police. I built his condo!'" -- Duke Bowen

3. Carl Spackler in Caddyshack. Speaking of one-liners, how about Bill Murray as Carl Spackler? As someone pointed out, if you don't hear a Carl Spackler quote from your foursome by the fourth hole in any given round, something's wrong!

Facebook fan quotes:

"Carl Spackler. Cinderella story, outta nowhere. 'Former greens keeper about to become Masters Champion... It looks like a mirac... IT'S IN THE HOLE! IT'S IN THE HOLE!'" -- Nick Lopez

"Carl Spackler because his skit about, 'becoming the Masters Champion,' was ALL complete improv. That's what makes it amazing! Either that or Shooter McGavin because Shooter is a boss." -- Jimmy Bailey

"Carl Spackler... You have to ask why?" -- Ted Guglielmo

"Carl Spackler in Caddyshack. Best quote: 'Big hitter, the Lama.'" -- Steve Crow

2. Ty Webb in Caddyshack. Played by Chevy Chase, Ty Webb was the son of one of Bushwood's founders and hilariously shared his views on life with caddy Danny Noonan.

Facebook fan quotes:

"Ty from Caddyshack. 'Tie me up with your ties, Ty.'" -- Darren Litteral

"Ty Webb... measured himself against other golfers by height!" -- Frank D. Wagner

"Ty Webb easily one of my favorite characters of all time." -- Josh Landry

"I gotta go with Ty Webb. 'Lets make it $40,000... My father never really liked you.'' -- Ryan C. Pontius

"Ty Webb. Chevy Chase's character in Caddyshack. Love the sounds he make when putting." -- Gordon Dean

1. Roy "Tin Cup" McAvoy in Tin Cup. Kevin Costner was just awesome as Roy McAvoy in Tin Cup, wasn't he? Everyone can relate to Roy McAvoy... but not many of us can play golf like him.

Facebook fan quotes:

"Tin Cup! Roy all the way. He never backs down. Love his caddy too." -- Annette DeMarrais Gester

"Roy McAvoy in Tin Cup. The looks on the pros faces when he has the shanks on the practice tee is hysterical." -- Brett Johnson

"Roy McAvoy. I'm not going to the left of those trees or the right of those trees. I'm going over those trees. With a little draw." -- Paul Brewer

"Tin Cup. Who hasn't been Roy McAvoy?" -- Robert McLean

"Tin Cup. Historic 12. My 12s are just average." -- Lee Raper

"Roy McAvoy - America loves a comeback! Roy 'Tin Cup' McAvoy goes from running a run down driving range to competing on the PGA Tour and gets a hot girl in the process. Everyone would love this story if it were to really happen like this." -- David R. Kloss

"Gotta go with Roy 'Tin Cup' McAvoy on this one. 'I can MAKE that shot!'" -- Nicholas Kenis

"Definitely Roy McAvoy! True underdog and every golf professional knows what it is like to hit the ball good on the practice tee then bring it to the course and keep it going! True underdog story!" -- Sean McLaughlin

"Roy 'Tin Cup' McAvoy! 'Gimme another ball!' That closing scene on the 18th hole of the U.S. Open will never be topped." -- Dan Sullivan

"Kevin Costner in Tin Cup. Just an average guy who would give up anything to prove he can do what they said couldn't be done. Perhaps it's better to go down in flames in history than to not make history at all." -- Thomas Courson
