The Masters Tournament, one of golf's four major championship events, has been held 82 times at Augusta National Golf Club since 1934, with 53 different players capturing the Masters trophy and a coveted green jacket.
Horton Smith was the first player to win that first Masters in 1934. The defending champion has gone on to win only three times in Masters history. (Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods). On 17 occasions, a player captured the win in a playoff.
Tiger Woods won the 2019 Masters, his fifth of his career. It was his first major tournament win since 2008.
No amateur has ever won the Masters. Ken Venturi was the closest amateur to winning in 1956. He held the 54-hole lead over the likes of Sam Snead, Ben Hogan and Arnold Palmer. Jack Burke, Jr. became a Masters winner after besting Venturi by a stroke in the final round.
