Director of InstructionJune Update:
The 2026 Men's U.S. Open Championship starts Thursday June 18th - Sunday June 21st. It will be at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club located on Long Island, New York. With Par being 70 & a yardage of 7,434 yards. Est.1891
Main Architect: In 1931 the redesign of the course by William Flynn, was completed. Flynn crafted a more strategic layout that took advantage of the site’s natural features and created a trio of routing triangles that expose a variety of wind directions.
Shinnecock Hills is the lone course to have hosted the U.S. Open in three (3) different Centuries! An additional update - Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy separately visited Shinnecock in early June and came away with the same conclusion: “generous fairways, lethal rough, and fast greens.”
Let's have a conversation first: If you have been watching You Tube or TikTok (etc.) and/or reading golf magazines and listening to your golf friends and have become confused – I’m here to help. I’d like to just start by having a conversation with you (or two of you) for up to a ½ hour (absolutely no charge) in the grill or outside on one of the patios to hear your concerns, before any possible golf lessons, go ahead & bring your clubs.
To schedule “a conversation about your golf game” go find the Message Board within this portal write a note to me with a couple of days and times that work for you … within the followig time perimeters for my June, July and August schedule: weekdays T, W, TH or F: Before 9 am, between 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm or after 7 pm until dusk.
Usually, I’m teaching in between the times given above, there might be a need for patience from both of us or a slight adjustment in time for me to finish a lesson or a conversation with someone else, but I will spend the time talking with you.
Saturday: it’s usually our busiest day for play and our practice areas, plus around the clubhouse. Normally for me it’s a make-up day for students because of weather or work/family conflicts. It can also be a good time to meet with people who can’t get away from work or other obligations during a normal 5 day week. Usually, there is some availability between 8 am and 12 noon to talk. Occasionally, a large wedding and/or reception can impact parking and outside seating in the afternoon and early evening.
Bio: "I couldn’t break 100 until I was 14—three years later, I won the junior club championship - thanks to a great coach and a refusal to quit. That journey shaped everything I do as a coach today.”
Key point for students: "I don’t want my students to have to go through what I went through! It’s a beautiful game, but its a little easier if we learn the fundamentals the right way the first time or at least the 2nd time.”
“I was fortunate enough to grow up in Lynchburg at a respected CC; played some high school golf and then a bit of college golf @ UR. After summer school(s) were over … I was able to compete at various amateur events for several years: the Payton Memorial, the Fox-Puss, the Eastern Amateur and the VSGA Amateur & Open.”
Rusty’s previous professional golf experience includes owning and operating a nine-hole Par 3 and covered driving range as the General Manager, PGA Head Professional and Lead Instructor having taught over 8,000 private and group lessons. “I’ve spent most of my teaching career coaching new golfers of all ages and genders; my mission is to make the learning curve less frustrating and a lot more fun.”
Rusty has been a Class ‘A’ PGA Golf Professional for over 30 years & has earned a Life Member active status.
