A Quick Nine: Best public courses in Indiana

Up until last week's BMW Championship at Crooked Stick, it had been a long time since our friends in Indiana had seen top level golf up close.

Why did it take so long? We don't know. What we do know is there's no shortage of great golf courses that are open to the public in the Hoosier state.

For this week's, 'A Quick Nine,' feature, we asked our friends in PGA.com Facebook Nation to identify for us the top-9 courses that are open to the public in Indiana.

9. The Brickyard Crossing in Indianapolis, Ind. Located right beside Indianapolis Motor Speedway (home of the Indy 500), Brickyard Crossing has played host to several PGA Tour and Champions Tour events through the years. Plus, you get some pretty cool views of the race track.

8. Coyote Crossing Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ind. In 2010, Golf Digest ranked Coyote Crossing No. 3 in America's nine sweetest deals.

7. Rock Hollow Golf Club in Peru, Ind. 6. Twin Bridges Golf Club in Danville, Ind. Twin Bridge had received a four-star rating from Golf Digest and is open year round. The front nine is known for its larger greens and fescue-lined bent grass fairways while the more traditional back nine offers rolling hills and tightly guarded greens.

5. Timbergate Golf Course in Edinburgh, Ind. Timbergate is owned by the town of Edinburgh and is named for the rich history of wood crafting the town is built upon. Designed by Clyde Johnston with Indiana native Fuzzy Zoeller, Timbergate is one of the premiere public courses in Indiana. The complete links style design was geared by Fuzzy to be both challenging to experienced players as well as playable by higher handicappers.

4. The Fort Golf Resort in Indianapolis, Ind. The course was redesigned by Pete Dye and Tim Liddy. In 1998, The Fort Golf Course was third under "Best Affordable New Public Courses" in Golf Digest. It's considered one of Indiana's best public golf courses.

3. French Lick Resort in French Lick, Ind. This includes two absolute gems -- the Donald Ross Course and the Pete Dye Course. Both played host to the PGA Professional National Championship in 2010.

2. Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville, Ind. Here's what the Indianapolis Business Journal had to say about Purgatory: "an enchanting design, gleaned from the inspirations of legendary architects Alistair MacKenzie, George Thomas, Seth Raynor and Indiana's own Bill Diddle... it's more beauty than beast. The greens are firm and fast, but fair. A well-struck putt is rewarded. The fairways, which I strolled across during my forays into the bunkers and rough, were exceptional."

1. Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ind.
