Uihlein wins match-up of amateur champions in 14th Georgia Cup

U.S. Amateur champion Peter Uihlein won the Georgia Cup on Tuesday, building a 4-up lead at the turn and holding on to beat British Amateur champion Jin Jeong on the 16th hole of their one-day, 18-hole contest.

It was the 14th year of the Georgia Cup, which matches the U.S. Amateur and British Amateur champions at The Golf Club of Georgia in the week before the Masters.

Uihlein flew back to Oklahoma State University after his 4-and-2 victory. He plans to return to Augusta National this weekend to compete in next week’s Masters for the first time.

Jeong, a 21-year-old Korean who lives in Australia, tried to fight back from the big deficit at the turn. Uihlein, however, closed him out with a shot into 3 feet for birdie.

U.S. Amateur champions now hold an 8-6 lead in the competition.
