Iconic College Golf Courses Where School Spirit Takes Center Stage

College football kicks off in earnest this weekend, with some big matchups ready to usher in the season.
As the teams take the field, here is a look at just a few college golf courses where you can feel the school spirit.
Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame (South Bend, IN)
The Feature: "Play Like A Champion Today" Sign
The Design: Mimicking the iconic sign players tap on their way to the Notre Dame Stadium tunnel, the replica sits adjacent to the 1st tee box to welcome golfers to their round. Opened in 1999, the course was designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, with links-inspired features like undulating greens, native fescue grasses, and classic square tee boxes. The course hosted the 2019 U.S. Senior Open, won by Steve Stricker.
The Walker Golf Course at Clemson University (Clemson, SC)
The Feature: The "Tiger Paw" (Hole 17)
The Design: Designed by DJ DeVictor, this campus-adjacent layout weaves through rolling terrain along the shores of Lake Hartwell. The crown jewel of its spirit-infused design is the signature par-3 17th hole, where the green and surrounding sand traps are precisely cut and contoured to form the iconic Clemson Tiger Paw logo when viewed from above.
Yale Golf Course (New Haven, CT)
The Feature: Historic Layout with Yale Accents
The Design: Originally designed by Seth Raynor under the guidance of Charles Blair Macdonald, this landmark course recently underwent a comprehensive restoration led by golf course architect Gil Hanse. The layout features historic template holes, including the famous par-3 9th, complemented by signature flags and custom stone tee markers.
University of Michigan Golf Course (Ann Arbor, MI)
The Feature: Alister MacKenzie Layout Facing "The Big House"
The Design: Designed by legendary architect Alister MacKenzie, the course offers sweeping views of The Big House as golfers play the closing stretch on the 18th hole. School spirit is built into the details, including custom Block "M" yardage plates set into every teeing area and Maize and Blue flags on every green.
The Scarlet Course at The Ohio State University (Columbus, OH)
The Spirit Feature: Buckeye Leaf Tee Boxes & Scarlet & Gray Decor
The Design: Originally designed by Alister MacKenzie and later renovated by OSU alumnus Jack Nicklaus, the Scarlet Course is steeped in Buckeye athletic tradition. Tee boxes feature custom metal markers shaped like Buckeye leaves and nuts, while the pins fly high-visibility Scarlet and Gray flags emblazoned with the official Ohio State athletic logo.
The Golf Club at UGA (Athens, GA)
The Spirit Feature: Bulldog Tee Markers & Georgia Flags
The Design: Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and renovated by Love Golf Design (led by UGA alumnus Davis Love III), the course prominently features custom-cast Georgia Bulldog tee markers at every tee box. The course incorporates deep red and black accents throughout, along with custom official Georgia "G" flags on every green.
The Golf Club at Texas A&M (College Station, TX)
The Spirit Feature: Maroon/White Decor with Kyle Field views
The Design: Redesigned by Texas A&M alumnus Jeff Blume ('89), the course sits on the edge of campus with views of the campus skyline and Kyle Field in the distance. The facility incorporates Aggie spirit throughout the layout with custom maroon-and-white flags bearing the "A&M" logo, custom-molded Aggie tee markers, and Aggie branding across the practice facilities.
